Cooking for twelve is a different exercise from cooking for six. The number of plates is the obvious part, but the real question is how many courses you plan to serve, whether guests will move between rooms, and how many people will be washing up afterwards. If you have already read our guide to a dinnerware set for six, you will recognise the basic logic. This article takes that logic further and shows how to build a service for twelve that is practical as well as generous.
Start with the place setting
A place setting is the group of pieces one guest uses for a single meal. For a standard dinner, that usually means:
- one dinner plate
- one side or bread plate
- one bowl, for soup, dessert or cereal
- one cup and saucer, if you serve coffee or tea with the meal
- one set of cutlery and one glass
A dinnerware set is normally sold as a number of place settings, so a set for twelve contains twelve of each piece in that list. Check whether a listing gives the count per piece or per setting before you order. A "12-person" set should contain at least twelve dinner plates, twelve side plates and twelve bowls. Some sets also include extra serving pieces, which matter more than people expect.

For a family that eats together most evenings, a full service for twelve is rarely necessary. Most households find it more useful to keep one complete service plus a few spares. Use this rough guide:
Everyday use. Twelve dinner plates, twelve side plates and twelve bowls give you a full table. Add two or three extra dinner plates so a broken piece does not leave you short.
Hosting a dinner party. If you plan three courses, you will need a starter plate, a main plate and a dessert plate or bowl for each guest. You can reuse a side plate for the starter, which saves space in the cupboard, but check that the proportions work with your menu.
Holiday and festive meals. Large family gatherings often run to two sittings or buffet-style serving. Here, plan for at least fourteen dinner plates and fourteen side plates, so that you can serve the first course and clear quickly without waiting for the dishwasher.
Coffee and dessert. A coffee cup set for twelve is one of the most used parts of a hosting collection. Buy one cup and saucer per guest and add a few more, because cups go missing during the evening more often than plates do.
Serving pieces you should not forget
Twelve people need more than individual place settings. The serving pieces decide how smoothly the meal runs.
- Large platters for mains or roasts, one or two of them
- Serving bowls for vegetables, salads and sides, in at least two sizes
- A gravy or sauce boat, which is always used and rarely replaced
- Serving dishes for dessert or cake, so that the table is not cleared in a hurry
If your set does not include serving pieces, you can add them from a separate serving and cake set collection and match the glaze and colour.
Choosing a material that copes with a crowded table
When you are feeding a larger group, the dinnerware is handled far more often. It is taken to the kitchen, stacked, rinsed and reset. The material should cope with that without fuss.
At ERS Home, every piece is made in our own factory in Istanbul, Türkiye. The glaze is food-safe and the pieces are designed to be dishwasher safe and microwave safe, so reheating a plate of food or washing up a full table does not require special handling. We sell directly as the manufacturer, which means the set you see on the site is the set that leaves our workshop, without a middleman adding a layer between you and the factory.
When comparing sets, look at the following:
- the stated weight and thickness of each piece, which affects how well the set stacks
- whether the glaze is described as food-safe
- whether the set is dishwasher and microwave safe
- the diameter of the dinner plates, since a 27 cm plate and a 25 cm plate change how much food fits on the table

Two of our featured series work well for a table of twelve.
The Dilek Ağacı collection suits a traditional, warm table. Its pattern lends itself to large family meals and to holidays, where people expect a full, layered look. It pairs well with a matching breakfast set for the morning after a big dinner.
The Verna collection is a cleaner, more contemporary choice. Its simpler surfaces make it easy to mix with other serving pieces, which helps when you are building a service for twelve over time rather than buying everything at once.
If you are furnishing a holiday home, a guest house or a café with a regular need for twelve place settings, our wholesale team can help with quantities and matching pieces.
Table-setting ideas for a group of twelve
A large table benefits from a little structure. A few simple approaches help:
Keep it consistent. Use the same dinner plate and side plate for every guest. Mixed patterns can look busy at twelve places.
Set one spare place. Keep a spare dinner plate and bowl on a side table in case a guest arrives late or a piece is dropped during service.
Use the bowls for more than soup. Serve starters, salads or dessert in them to reduce the number of separate dishes you need.
Plan the coffee moment. Set the coffee cups on a tray or sideboard rather than on the table, so the main setting stays clear.
Caring for a large set
With twelve place settings, you will be washing a lot of plates at once. A few habits keep the set in good condition:
- stack plates with a cloth or paper between them if they are heavy or glazed in a pattern that could scratch
- avoid stacking very hot plates directly from the dishwasher, which can cause thermal shock
- store the set in a dry cupboard and keep the cups upright so they do not chip at the rim
- check that the dishwasher is loaded so that plates do not knock against each other during the cycle
Gifting a dinnerware set for twelve
A full service is a generous gift for a new home, a wedding or a family milestone. If you are buying for someone else, consider sending a dinner set alongside a coffee cup set, so the gift is useful on both everyday and special occasions.
We ship worldwide. The courier cost is shown at checkout, and import duties are paid by the recipient, so you can see the full picture before you order. If you are ordering for a friend abroad, check the local import rules for ceramics in their country before you buy.
Choosing the right number
For most households, a set for twelve with a few spares is the sweet spot. It covers large family dinners, a holiday table and the occasional party without filling the cupboard with pieces you use once a year. Start with the number of guests you host most often, add two or three spare plates and bowls, and then choose serving pieces that match your typical menu.
