Turkish ceramic plates have a long history, and they still work well on a modern table. The patterns carry centuries of visual tradition, while the pieces themselves are practical everyday dinnerware. This guide explains where the designs come from, how they are made in a working factory, and how to choose and use them at home.

Where the patterns come from

Most Turkish ceramic design draws on a few well-documented sources. The best known is Iznik ceramics, produced in the city of Iznik in north-western Anatolia from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century. Iznik potters worked with a bright palette, most famously a clear turquoise, cobalt blue, tomato red and sage green, and they favoured stylised flowers such as tulips, carnations, hyacinths and roses, often arranged in repeating borders. Kütahya, further west, developed its own tradition of colourful floral and geometric wares that remains important today.

These motifs are not only decorative. Tulips, carnations and roses appear again and again because they were treated as symbols of abundance and good fortune. When you see a repeating floral border on a plate, you are looking at a visual language that many Turkish households recognise immediately.

Folk motifs add another layer. Some of our designs draw on everyday symbols from Turkish culture. The Dilek Ağacı series, for example, takes its name from the wish tree, a long-standing image in which people tie wishes to a branch. It is a simple idea that suits a table set for friends and family.

How modern factory decoration works

A good plate starts with the body and the glaze, and the decoration comes later. In our own factory in Istanbul, the process runs roughly as follows. The clay body is shaped, dried and given a first firing. The surface is then prepared and the decoration is applied. Depending on the design, this can involve printed transfers, decals or glaze techniques. The piece is glazed and fired again at high temperature, which fixes the colour and gives the surface its gloss and hardness.

Because the process is industrial, patterns are consistent from one plate to the next, which matters when you buy sets of six or twelve. Each product page explains the decoration method used for that item. We do not describe a piece as hand painted unless that is true for the specific product, so please check the listing if handwork is important to you.

Every glaze we use is food-safe, and our plates are designed to be dishwasher safe and microwave safe. These are the points most people ask about first, and they are the reason a decorative plate can also be the one you use every morning.

Choosing the right pieces

The easiest way to build a table is to think in place settings. A place setting usually includes a dinner plate, a side or dessert plate, a bowl and a cup. Sizes vary between collections, but as a general guide:

  • A dinner plate is typically around 26 to 27 cm across. It suits main courses, pasta, rice and grilled dishes.
  • A side plate is typically around 20 to 21 cm. It works for salads, bread, cake and starters.
  • A small plate, around 15 to 16 cm, is useful for breakfast, tapas-style serving or as a bread plate.
  • A deep bowl suits soups, stews, yoghurt and breakfast cereal.

If you are buying for a small flat, a single set of four dinner and four side plates covers most daily use. For a family or for entertaining, six or eight place settings give you enough flexibility for guests without washing up between courses.

When you are ready to shop by use, these categories are a good starting point:

For the Verna series and other collections, the product pages list the exact dimensions and piece counts, which is more reliable than general guidance.

Table setting ideas

Turkish tableware suits both relaxed and formal settings, and mixing patterns works well if you keep one element constant. Here are a few approaches we see customers use:

  • Pattern on the dinner plate, plain linen underneath. Let the decorated plate be the focus and keep the cloth and napkins simple.
  • Matching side plates with a single accent colour. Choose one colour from the pattern, such as the blue or red, and repeat it in napkins, glassware or a small vase.
  • Breakfast table with two patterns. Serve bread and cheese on a smaller patterned plate and keep the bowls in a coordinating shade.
  • Coffee corner. Place a serving tray with a matching cup set, a small dish of sweets and a glass of water. It looks considered without needing a full dinner service.

For entertaining, the serving sets are useful for cake, platters and sharing dishes, and they often look best when two or three sizes are used together.

Caring for your plates

Good ceramics last for years with simple habits. A few points make a difference:

  • Dishwasher and microwave use is fine for our plates, but avoid sudden temperature changes such as moving a very hot plate straight into cold water.
  • Stack plates with a soft separator, such as a folded cloth or a felt pad, if you store them in tight piles. This protects the glaze from scratches.
  • Avoid using abrasive scourers on decorated areas. A soft sponge and normal washing-up liquid are enough.
  • Do not leave plates soaking for long periods, especially with strong detergents.

If a plate is chipped or cracked, stop using it for food. A glaze crack can trap bacteria, so it is better to replace the piece.

Gifting with Turkish ceramics

Turkish plates make thoughtful gifts for housewarmings, weddings and anniversaries. A single decorative plate can be given with a bag of coffee or a box of sweets, and a full dinnerware set is a practical present for someone setting up a first home. When choosing, consider the recipient's existing colours and whether they cook for a large group or prefer smaller, everyday pieces.

Buying directly from the factory

ERS Home is a family-owned manufacturer in Istanbul, and we sell our breakfast, dinner and coffee sets directly to customers around the world. You are buying from the maker, not through a reseller, which keeps the process simple and lets us answer questions about how each piece is made. We ship worldwide. The courier cost is shown at checkout before you pay, and import duties and taxes, where they apply, are paid by the recipient. Businesses that want to stock or serve these designs can also review our wholesale information.

If you are choosing between patterns, start with the product pages for the Dilek Ağacı and Verna series, compare the sizes, and build a set that suits the way you actually eat. A plate that looks good and works every day is the best place to begin.
