Choosing plates sounds simple until you start comparing listings. One brand calls a 27 cm plate a dinner plate, another calls the same size a large plate, and a third lists only the diameter in inches. This guide sets out the typical size ranges for each plate type in centimetres and inches, explains how to match them to your table and cupboards, and gives a few practical tips on fit and care.

Why plate sizes vary

There is no single international standard for tableware. Sizes are usually measured across the widest point of the rim, and the same name can mean slightly different things in different markets. A dinner plate in one country may be a little smaller than a dinner plate in another. The ranges below reflect what most households and restaurants use, so treat them as a guide rather than a strict specification.

Always check the diameter printed on the product page before you buy. For a complete set, it helps to compare the diameter, the rim width and the depth of the well, not just the name.

Dinner plates

The dinner plate is the largest piece in a standard place setting. Most dinner plates measure between 26 and 28 centimetres, or about 10.2 to 11 inches. This size leaves enough room for a main course, a portion of vegetables and a starch without the food crowding the rim. If you want a more generous look for a formal table, a 28 centimetre plate works well. For everyday use, 26 to 27 centimetres is often easier to store and handle.

Salad and side plates

Salad plates, also called side plates, usually range from 20 to 23 centimetres, which is roughly 7.9 to 9.1 inches. They are used for salads, bread, starters and, in many homes, breakfast. Because they are smaller, they are easy to stack and take up less space in the cupboard. A single place setting typically includes one dinner plate and one salad or side plate, placed above and to the left of the dinner plate.

Dessert plates

Dessert plates are the smallest full-size plates in most sets. A diameter of 19 to 21 centimetres (about 7.5 to 8.3 inches) suits a slice of cake, a tart or a bowl of fruit. Some people also use them for light breakfasts or for serving bread at a relaxed meal.

Bread and butter plates

If you host regularly, a small bread and butter plate in the 15 to 17 centimetre range (about 5.9 to 6.7 inches) is useful. It sits above the forks on the left of the setting and keeps bread separate from the main plates.

Serving platters

Serving pieces are much larger, often between 30 and 40 centimetres (11.8 to 15.7 inches). They are made for sharing rather than individual portions, so they suit roasts, pasta, cheese boards and cold cuts. Check the platter's depth as well as its diameter if you plan to serve sauces or juices.

Matching plates to your table and cupboards

Table size

A standard dining table is usually set with plates of 26 to 28 centimetres. On a small table or a breakfast bar, smaller plates often look more balanced and leave room for glasses, cutlery and serving dishes. If you have a round table, consider a slightly smaller dinner plate so that guests have more elbow room.

Cabinet and shelf fit

Before buying a full set, measure the inside height and width of the cupboard or shelf where the plates will live. Dinner plates stack well in piles of six to eight, but a stack of ten or more can be too tall for a standard upper cabinet. Measure the space between shelves, allow a few centimetres of clearance above the stack, and check the depth of the shelf so the plates do not overhang the front edge.

If you have limited storage, a set with a consistent diameter across dinner and salad plates can make stacking simpler, because the smaller plates nest neatly on top of or inside the larger ones in the same cabinet space.

Dishwasher fit

A standard dishwasher rack usually takes dinner plates up to about 27 to 28 centimetres across. Larger serving platters often need to be washed by hand or placed on the lower rack at an angle, depending on the machine. Check your dishwasher manual for the maximum plate diameter if you are unsure. Place plates facing the centre of the rack, not overlapping, so that water and detergent reach the whole surface.

Microwave use

Our dinnerware is dishwasher safe and microwave safe, which makes it practical for everyday meals and reheating. Avoid heating empty plates for long periods, and let food cool slightly before handling, as with any ceramic piece.

Choosing a set for your household

For most families, a practical starting point is four to six dinner plates, the same number of salad or side plates, and a few dessert plates. Adding bowls and a couple of serving pieces covers most everyday needs. Larger households or people who entertain often may want eight to twelve of each core piece.

Sets are also useful when you want consistency. If you are looking for a complete setting, our dinnerware sets include matching dinner, side and dessert plates in a single design. If your mornings are the priority, the breakfast sets collection focuses on sizes suited to cereal, eggs and toast. For larger gatherings, our serving and cake sets add platters and stands that match the plates.

Our Dilek Ağacı and Verna series are both available in multiple piece sizes, so you can build a table that matches your storage space and the way you eat.

Care tips to keep plates in good condition

Food-safe glaze is only part of the story. Good everyday care helps plates last longer and keeps their finish looking fresh.

  • Let plates cool before washing them, especially after using the oven or microwave.
  • Stack plates with a soft cloth or felt pad between them if you store them in tall piles.
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as moving a hot plate directly into cold water.
  • Use a soft detergent in the dishwasher and avoid stacking heavy pieces on delicate rims.

Gifting and special occasions

A full set of dinner, side and dessert plates makes a practical wedding or housewarming gift. If you are buying for someone else, mention the sizes they already use, or choose a complete place setting so that the gift works straight away. Serving platters are also a good choice for hosts who entertain often.

If you are buying for a restaurant, café or hotel, or you need larger quantities for a project, our wholesale information explains how we work with trade customers.
