Investing in quality ceramic tableware is a decision that elevates everyday dining into something memorable. Whether you are setting the table for a quiet morning coffee or hosting a large family dinner, beautiful ceramics anchor the entire experience. However, keeping your plates, bowls, and mugs looking pristine for years to come requires a bit of practical knowledge. Because we craft our collections directly in our family-owned factory in Tuzla, Istanbul, we spend a lot of time testing our high-fired glazes under real-world conditions. We want your pieces to endure through countless meals, dishwasher cycles, and celebrations.

Here is our definitive guide to caring for your ceramic tableware, preventing everyday wear, and ensuring your favorite sets stand the test of time.

Choosing Durable and Lightweight Ceramics

Longevity actually begins before you even open the box. When selecting new pieces for your home, understanding material composition makes all the difference. Many modern buyers seek out the best lightweight dinnerware sets that offer durability without feeling heavy or clumsy in the hand. High-fire ceramics achieve this balance by dense vitrification during firing, which creates a strong body that resists chipping while remaining remarkably slender.

When you browse a well-curated dinnerware set, pay attention to the glaze finish. A food-safe, high-temperature glaze seals the porous clay body underneath, protecting the ceramic from moisture absorption, staining, and bacteria. This protective layer is also what makes quality ceramics safe for both the dishwasher and the microwave.

Daily Care: Dishwasher Safety and Temperature Control

One of the most common questions we receive from international customers is whether our ceramics can go straight into the machine. All ERS Home tableware features food-safe glazes that are completely dishwasher safe. However, how you load and run your machine matters.

The Golden Rules of Dishwasher Use

  • Choose the right cycle: Opt for normal or eco cycles with moderate water temperatures (around 50°C to 65°C). Avoid aggressive, industrial-strength pots-and-pans cycles, which can slowly dull the glossy finish over years of washing.
  • Load with care: Ensure plates and bowls do not touch each other directly. Vibrations during the wash cycle can cause rattling, leading to micro-chips along the rims.
  • Detergent choice: Use mild, high-quality dishwashing liquids or tablets rather than harsh abrasive powders.

Preventing Thermal Shock

Ceramics are resilient, but sudden, extreme temperature shifts can cause thermal shock, leading to invisible micro-cracks or sudden breakage. Never transfer a freezing plate straight from the refrigerator into a hot pre-heated oven. Similarly, avoid placing a scalding-hot baking dish directly onto a cold, wet granite countertop. Gradual temperature changes allow the clay and glaze to expand and contract uniformly.

Dealing with Grey Metal Marks

Have you ever noticed thin, grey pencil-like streaks on your white or cream ceramic plates after dinner? Many people mistake these for permanent scratches in the glaze, but they are actually harmless metal residue.

When stainless steel cutlery scrapes against a harder ceramic glaze during cutting, microscopic particles of the metal rub off onto the surface. These marks do not mean your tableware is ruined; they simply sit on top of the glaze.

To remove grey metal marks easily:

  1. Make a thick paste using bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) and a few drops of water.
  2. Apply the paste directly to the grey streaks.
  3. Gently rub the area with a soft sponge or a non-scratch cloth using circular motions.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and dry with a soft tea towel.

For everyday maintenance, you can also explore our versatile breakfast set options, designed with durable glazes that resist everyday cutlery friction.

Proper Storage and Safe Stacking

How you store your tableware in cupboards and drawers heavily influences how long your pieces remain flawless. Improper stacking puts unnecessary pressure on the bottom rims and can cause scratching on the glazed surfaces underneath.

  • Avoid over-stacking: Keep plate stacks manageable. Stacking ten heavy dinner plates on top of one another puts immense weight on the lowest plate.
  • Use felt separators: If you are stacking delicate plates or hand-decorated pieces like our beloved Dilek Ağacı or VERNA series, place a small felt pad, napkin, or paper towel between each plate to prevent friction.
  • Store cups correctly: Hang coffee cups by their handles on a sturdy rack, or stack them no more than two high to protect the delicate handles from snapping.

For morning routines and afternoon tea, pairing your plates with a matching coffee & tea set ensures cohesive styling while keeping your storage organized.
